Duke Energy 2008 Waterfall Trek Series

Hikes will be led by Alvin Feltman, retired Asst. Forest Ranger with the US Forest Service.  He can be reached by email at:   woodlandasoc@prtcnet.com. Hikers should pay attention to the degree of difficulty listed. Start time for each hike is 10:00AM.   Make sure to register for a hike in advance by calling (803)-771-0870 or by emailing sanderson@palmettoconservation.org  

 

Saturday, December 6,  10:00AM, Raven Cliff Falls (Greenville County) 

Degree of Difficulty/Time:  a moderate hike of approximately 5.4 miles/3.5 hours minimum 

Details:  This postcard quality 400 foot fall is well worth the moderate hike it takes to get there.  Matthews Creek begins its descent in a series of short drops, then takes one long plunge and a few short ones before disappearing in the forest below.   

Directions:  From Greenville, drive north on US 276 to Caesars Head State Park.  Drive past Caesars Head another 1.1 miles and turn right into the parking area for Raven Cliff Falls.

 

Sunday, December 7th, 10:00AM,  Green Creek Falls, (Pickens County) 

Degree of Difficulty/Time:  a moderate hike of approximately 1 mile/ 1.5 hours minimum  

Details:  There is a $2 entrance fee for Table Rock State Park.  This 30 foot high fall offers one of the most interesting rock faces of any waterfall in the state with a layered outcropping that causes the water to trickle down the rock face in small plunges. 

 Directions:  From Pickens, take US 178 to the junction with SC 11. Drive east on SC 11 for 4.3 miles to the east entrance to Table Rock State Park on the left.  The entrance fee is $2.00 per person. Continue beyond the park gate to the large parking area past the lake.
