First Paragraph of Introduction
It is a drizzly,
gray March morning on the Catawba River in Burke County, North
Carolina. From the edge of a pier overlooking Lake Rhodhiss, we can
trace two baited fishing lines down into the murky water. And while
the lake usually offers trophy-sized largemouths and walleye, this
rig will be lucky to lure a bluegill. Local fishermen like to thank
1989’s Hurricane Hugo for blessing Rhodhiss with the most lay-down
trees of any lake its size in North Carolina. Behind us, the parking
area at the Rhodhiss Access Area is deserted. The steep, 47-step
staircase creased into a hill separating the two-tiered lot leads up
into gray mist. It is discernibly lonely...
